Choose Your Wallet
Your gateway to DeFi — choose once, use for everything
Last updated: March 2026

A wallet is the software that holds your private key and lets you interact with blockchains. It is not where your crypto "lives" — your assets live on the blockchain itself. The wallet is the key that proves ownership and authorizes transactions.

Three wallets cover the vast majority of what you will ever need in DeFi. Each is optimized for a different use case.

Wallet Best For Type Supported Chains
MetaMask Popular Ethereum and all EVM-compatible chains (BNB, Polygon, Arbitrum, etc.) Browser extension + Mobile app Ethereum, BNB Chain, and 10,000+ EVM chains
Phantom Solana Solana ecosystem and Solana-based DeFi protocols Browser extension + Mobile app Solana (primary), Ethereum, Bitcoin
Trust Wallet Mobile-first users who want one app for everything Mobile app only 70+ blockchains including all major chains
Which One Should You Start With?

For Ethereum and BNB Chain: Install MetaMask. It is the most widely supported wallet in DeFi and works with virtually every protocol.

For Solana: Install Phantom. It is purpose-built for Solana and offers the smoothest experience on that chain.

Want one wallet for everything on mobile: Trust Wallet covers all major chains and is straightforward to use on iPhone and Android.

You can install more than one. Many serious DeFi participants use MetaMask for EVM chains and Phantom for Solana simultaneously.

Installing MetaMask

  • 1

    Go to the official website

Open your browser and go to metamask.io. Always use the official URL. Never install MetaMask from a link in an email, a social media post, or a search ad.

  • 2

    Install the browser extension

Click "Download" and select your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or Edge). The extension installs automatically. On mobile, download the MetaMask app from the App Store or Google Play — again, only from the official store listing.

  • 3

    Create a new wallet

Click "Create a new wallet" and set a strong password. This password protects the app on your device. It is not your private key.

  • 4

    Write down your seed phrase

MetaMask will show you a 12-word seed phrase. Write it on paper. Store it somewhere physically secure. Never photograph it. Never store it in a notes app, email, or cloud storage. This is the master key to your wallet. Anyone who has it controls everything in it.

  • 5

    Confirm the seed phrase

MetaMask asks you to confirm your seed phrase by selecting words in order. Once confirmed, your wallet is ready to use.

Installing Phantom (Solana)

  • 1

    Go to the official website

Go to phantom.app. Same rule applies: only the official URL, never a third-party link.

  • 2

    Install the extension or app

Select your browser or mobile platform. The installation process is identical to MetaMask.

  • 3

Create wallet and secure your seed phrase

Same process as MetaMask. Write the seed phrase on paper. Store it securely. This step is non-negotiable.

Hardware Wallet — Worth Considering

Once your DeFi holdings exceed an amount you would be seriously upset to lose, consider a hardware wallet (Ledger or Trezor). A hardware wallet stores your private key on a physical device that never touches the internet. It works alongside MetaMask and Phantom — you still use those interfaces, but transactions are signed on the hardware device. The upfront cost (approximately €70-150) is worth it above meaningful amounts.

02
Pick Your Blockchain
Where your transactions happen — each has its own strengths

A blockchain is the infrastructure on which DeFi protocols run. Different blockchains have different transaction costs, speeds, and ecosystems. You are not locked into one — you can use all three. But for your first steps, pick one and learn it well.

Ethereum
Native coin: ETH

The original smart contract blockchain and still the largest DeFi ecosystem by total value. Most protocols launch on Ethereum first. Transaction fees (gas) can be high during busy periods.

Wallet: MetaMask
BNB Chain
Native coin: BNB

Ethereum-compatible chain with significantly lower transaction fees. Large DeFi ecosystem, particularly strong for yield farming and trading. Runs on MetaMask with a simple network switch.

Wallet: MetaMask
Solana
Native coin: SOL

High-speed, low-cost blockchain with a fast-growing DeFi ecosystem. Transaction fees are fractions of a cent. Phantom is the dedicated Solana wallet. MetaMask also works with most Solana-based apps — useful when Phantom shows security warnings on referral links.

Wallet: Phantom or MetaMask
Recommendation for Beginners

Start with one chain. If you want access to the widest range of DeFi protocols: Ethereum. If you want low fees and fast transactions while learning: BNB Chain or Solana. All three are legitimate starting points. The skills you develop on one transfer directly to the others.

03
Get Your First Crypto
Two routes — one simple, one smarter for larger amounts

To use DeFi, you need crypto in your wallet. There are two primary ways to get it. Each has its place depending on how much you want to start with and how you prefer to work.

Route A — Quick Start

Buy Directly in Your Wallet

MetaMask, Phantom, and Trust Wallet all have built-in buy functions. You pay with a debit or credit card and crypto arrives in your wallet within minutes.

  • + Fastest way to get started
  • + No separate account needed
  • + Works for small amounts
  • Higher fees than exchange route
  • KYC verification required
  • Card limits apply

Route A: Buying Directly in MetaMask

  • 1

    Open MetaMask and click "Buy"

The "Buy" button appears on the main wallet screen. MetaMask routes your purchase through a third-party provider (MoonPay, Transak, or similar depending on your region).

  • 2

    Select your amount and coin

Choose ETH for Ethereum, BNB for BNB Chain, or SOL for Solana. Enter the EUR or USD amount you want to spend. The provider shows you exactly what you receive after fees.

  • 3

    Complete KYC if required

Most providers require identity verification (passport or ID card) above small thresholds. This is a legal requirement, not optional. Have your ID ready.

  • 4

    Confirm and receive

Complete the payment with your debit or credit card. Crypto typically arrives in your wallet within 5-30 minutes.

Non-Custodial Cross-Chain Swap Services

Services like ff.io let you swap between chains without an account, without KYC for standard amounts, and without holding your funds at any point. You send from your wallet, you receive directly in your wallet. No platform controls your assets during the swap. This is the structural advantage over CEX-based conversions.

Several established services operate on the same principle: ff.io (FixedFloat), ChangeNOW, and Changelly all support non-custodial cross-chain swaps across the major blockchains. For users who prioritize full decentralization with no intermediary at all, THORChain executes native swaps directly on-chain via smart contracts. Always compare rates across services before confirming a swap, as fees vary meaningfully by service and by the chain pair you are swapping.

Why a Dedicated Account Makes Sense

A dedicated crypto account gives you your own IBAN for SEPA transfers, lower conversion fees than card purchases, and a clean separation between your bank account and your crypto activity. For anyone who plans to participate in DeFi regularly rather than just once, this setup pays for itself quickly in reduced fees and added flexibility.

Trustyfy (trustyfy.com) is a non-custodial Web3 banking platform that combines a personal IBAN account with direct crypto conversion and wallet connectivity. It is structured to minimize unnecessary verification friction while remaining fully compliant — a meaningful practical advantage compared to traditional exchanges, which often require extensive documentation at lower thresholds.

  • 1

    Open your account at Trustyfy

Go to trustyfy.com and create your account. You will receive a personal IBAN that you can use for SEPA bank transfers from any European bank account.

  • 2

    Transfer funds from your bank

Send EUR from your regular bank account to your Trustyfy IBAN via standard SEPA transfer. Funds typically arrive within one business day.

  • 3

    Convert to your target coin

Within Trustyfy, convert your EUR to ETH, BNB, or SOL depending on which blockchain you are starting with. Check the conversion rate and fee before confirming.

  • 4

Send to your wallet — directly or via ff.io

Send your coins directly to your MetaMask or Phantom wallet address. If you need to switch between chains (e.g. you have ETH but want SOL), use ff.io as a cross-chain exchange: enter your source coin and target coin, paste your destination wallet address, and the conversion happens automatically.

  • 5

    Confirm arrival in your wallet

Open MetaMask or Phantom and verify the balance. On Solana, transactions confirm in seconds. On Ethereum, allow 1-5 minutes depending on network activity.

Alternative: Regulated Crypto Exchanges (CEX)

If you prefer to buy crypto through a regulated exchange before sending to your wallet, several established options are available: Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, and Bitstamp all support bank transfers and card purchases in most countries.

Important — applies to all centralized exchanges: Every regulated exchange is custodial. They hold your coins, not you. This means transfers can be temporarily blocked or funds frozen at their discretion or due to regulatory pressure. This is not a theoretical risk. White & TT recommends non-custodial solutions as the default for anyone serious about DeFi. If you use a CEX, withdraw to your own wallet promptly after purchasing. Never leave significant amounts on a custodial platform longer than necessary.
